About Self Defence Academy UK
About Self Defence Academy UK — established in 2008 — we teach practical, pressure-tested self-defence that builds calm, confidence, and clear decision-making. Training runs weekly across Leeds, York, Sheffield, Hull, Harrogate and Newcastle, with certified coaches and beginner-friendly progressions.
Our mission
Equip people with simple, reliable skills they can recall under stress: situational awareness, de-escalation, creating space and getting to safety. We keep sessions welcoming and structured, so newcomers can start any week and experienced students keep improving.
Where we teach
Our programmes run across Yorkshire and the North. Each location follows the same coaching standards and safety policies, with local timetables and venues:
Leeds — weekly evening sessions at a well-equipped leisure centre
York — central venue with easy transport links
Sheffield — mixed-level training with beginner foundations
Hull — practical skills with supportive coaching culture
Harrogate — friendly group, clear progressions
Newcastle — structured training and great atmosphere
(See the Locations pages for exact times, venues and parking details.)
Our method: realistic, not reckless
- Awareness & pre-contact cues — spot risk early, position smartly, use voice.
- De-escalation — calm, clear boundary-setting to avoid physical confrontation.
- Movement & structure — balance, footwork, and framing to stay composed.
- Simple tools — gross-motor striking and blocking you can recall when adrenaline spikes.
- Escapes & exits — break posture, create space, leave safely.
- Scenario practice — controlled pressure that reflects real-world problems without sacrificing safety.
